About Mechanical EngineeringMechanical engineering at Modern College of Engineering is as old as the College (MCOE) itself. It is committed to nourish its students into highly skilled and proficient engineers. The department started in 1999 with the intake of 60 students which later increased to 120 from the year 2008-09.and now it is increased to intake of 180 from this academic year 2012-2013. The Department also offers two-year master’s program in ‘HEAT POWER ENGINEERING’ to prepare students for research and professional practices. Like its undergraduate program, this master’s program (started in 2008-09) is fully government recognized, approved by AICTE and affiliated to University of Pune. The department has ten fully equipped labs supervised by experienced teachers. Through the experiments performed at the labs, the students get practical knowledge supplementing the learning gathered in the classrooms. In addition to well established Workshop and Conventional Engineering Labs, there are modern Labs like Mechatronics Lab, CAD/CAM Lab, CNC work station and R & D Lab in the department. The knowledge acquired in the lab eventually equips the students to provide quality service once employed in the industry. There are 35 faculties, many of whom have worthy industrial experience and many are members of the SAE, ASME, ISHRAE, ISTE etc. To build up individual initiative, creativity, talent, leadership and the capability to adopt new technologies we encourage the students for participating in the National Events like SAE- (I): BAJA Competition etc where students have to design, manufacture and drive all-terrain vehicle on the loam track . Last year, students won the prize for best acceleration and hill climb events.
This year 2012 team participated in “Effi-Cycle Competition” at Chandigarh where they designed and manufactured Cycle Rickshaw and participated in the race; the team got the First Prize at national level. The students have received prize in ‘ROBOCON Competition’ (International level) held at MIT Pune in March 2011. Prof. S. G. Taji & Prof S. M. Ramnani are working BCUD funded Research projects for academic year 2011-12. Several of the graduates who have passed out of this department are occupying responsible positions in various Engineering Industries, Government & Semi Government Organizations or are pursuing higher studies in the premier educational institutes in and outside India. The department organizes, on regular basis, different seminars, workshops, and many other short terms courses as well. The department has been very successful in keeping abreast with new and emerging technologies which has been made available to students also through such interactions. The department organizes field trips to companies, factories and power stations to build a good foundation for the students in the areas of power generation, air conditioning, automobile engineering, gear manufacture, press tool and jig design, metrology etc. Prof S. M. Ramnani of the Mechanical engineering has all the skills to look after the in-house maintenance for machinery. He also has started morning and evening practice-sessions for students regarding scooter maintenance. A small shade is made available for this purpose. The department has revealed a great deal of industry goodwill owing to its continuous interaction with industry for mutual sharing of the academic-industry experiences. At Mechanical Engineering Department, we plan to develop this partnership with local and regional industry and improve the image of the department to a broader academic community. Students of final year level are doing their engineering projects in various industries including KOEL, TATA MOTORS, BEHR, KBL, JOHN DEER, GODREJ, ARAI etc. Further development requires an extra commitment emphasizing engineering research and taking a one step forward for doctoral program. Recently, the college has been given permission to start a Research Centre for Ph.D in Mechanical Engineering. The department wishes to actively engage in the areas of Heat Transfer, Refrigeration and Air conditioning to provide R & D leadership required for our industry. By promptly responding to the challenges to come the department of mechanical engineering is determined to become a premier department among all university affiliated and other autonomous institutes. Mechanical engineering department has a diverse and successful student population and the students from the department are well placed in famous organizations during past few years. The prominent among these are
