Telescope making Workshop
Day & Date : 23rd March to 9th April 2018
Resource Person : Mayuresh A. Kulkarni
Objectives :
  • To make the students familiar with basic optics concepts.
  • To understand the basics of optical designing.
  • To learn about telescope making on their own.
  • To introduce the sky objects and telescopic observations.
  • To give student opportunity of hands on experience of building their own scientific instrument.
Outcomes :
  • Students were able to do basic optical designing by their own.
  • Each student made his own telescope.
  • They designed telescope coupler for tripod.
  • They had opportunity to hands on experience of scientific instrument building.
Summary report :

As a part of “Astronomy Club” of MCOE, telescope making workshop was organised. Workshop contained a couple of lectures on Introduction to optical Telescope and related optics.
Each student got the kit in the practical session. It was an opportunity for hands on experience of optical designing & observation of the objects like – Jupiter’s moons, Andromeda galaxy or star clusters like Pleiades from self-made refractor telescope.
Along with optics, students designed mechanical component - a coupler of telescope with tripod. Cad design is also made.

Webcast screening of lecture by Dr. Jayant Narlikar (Science day)
Day & Date : 28th February 2018
Resource Person : Mayuresh A. Kulkarni
Objectives :
  • To make the students familiar with Cosmology and astronomical concepts.
  • Give opportunity to students to listen to world class scientists.
Outcomes :
  • Students were introduced to concepts like big bang and other theories of the origin of universe.
  • Students were inspired listening to esteemed professor.
Summary report :

As a part of “Astronomy Club” of MCOE, science day was celebrated giving students opportunity to listen to esteemed professor. Screening facility was set-up at Dept. of Physics and students listened to live lecture by Prof. Narlikar from IUCAA, Pune.

Basic Astronomy lecture series
Day & Date :27th January to 10th Feb 2018
Resource Person : Mayuresh A. Kulkarni
Objectives :
  • To make the students familiar with fascinating world of astronomical research.
  • Introduce students to solar system and stars.
  • Prepare student’s temperament to sky observations and telescope/observation sensor designing and building.
Outcomes :
  • Students were introduced to solar system motions, Earth’s motions and star formation.
  • Students were inspired for sky observation.
Summary report :

As a part of “Astronomy Club” of MCOE, with students demand, basic astronomy lecture series was organised in the span of a month period.
About five lectures were given by Mr. Mayuresh Kulkarni covering topics of Earth motion, planetary motion, Solar system, Stars and telescopic observations.
Students showed keen interest in Telescope and technology regarding Telescope optics and demanded separate workshop for Telescope building.

Astronomy Club

We are fraternity of students enthusiastic in Astronomy and Technological offshoots from Physics. We are students from PES's Modern College of Engineering, Pune, from all years (1st year to 4th year) who want to nurture our curiosity of this interesting universe and aspire to develop new technologies for further exploration. Motivating professors from Dept. of Physics are actively involved in all activities of our club. The club routinely runs following various activities.

Objective

  • To create interest in Astronomy and in general Physics.
  • To study astronomical events Physics point of view.
  • To develop understanding of engineering aspects of current Astronomical techniques.
  • To give students opportunity to have hands on experience on different astronomical projects.
  • To disseminate information of the ongoing Astronomy projects and job opportunities for engineers in the field of Astronomy.

Activities

  • Basic Astronomy lecture series: 7 lecture sessions designed to disseminate knowledge of Astronomy and related Physics.
  • Telescope making Workshop: 5 Lecture sessions of fundamental optics for designing your own telescope followed by 2 sessions of practical and sky observation.
  • Astronomical events observations:Observation/ talk for special events such as eclipse etc.
  • Technological Projects :For motivated students, special projects are offered such as building sensor for Telescope, image analysis, photometry etc.
  • Guest Lecture by reputed scientist:Talks by esteemed scientist from International/National institutes. Info on job opportunities in Astronomy field.
  • #Students Drive Lunch Talks: Opportunity for active members to brush up their knowledge and presentation skills.
