The Department of Information Technology (IT) at P.E.S's Modern College of Engineering, Pune was established in 2006, initially admitting 60 students in its inaugural year. Recognizing the ever-increasing demand for skilled IT professionals, the intake capacity of the department was subsequently increased to 120 students from the academic year 2011-2012.Department’s UG Engineering Program has been accredited by National Board of Accreditation (NBA) for three years (2025-26, 2026-27 and 2027-28).

The department of Information Technology at P.E.S's Modern College of Engineering is professionally running department working for the accomplishment of a mission to develop skilled IT professionals, by offering value-based quality education. The Department has made rapid strides as department of excellence for providing modern technical education intensive and meaningful teaching methods as well as regular inputs from practicing corporate.

To strengthen a digitally enabled learning ecosystem, the department encourages students to pursue online certification programs in emerging areas of engineering. These opportunities are offered in collaboration with IIT Madras and IIT Bombay through NPTEL’s advanced MOOC certifications and the Spoken Tutorial initiative, respectively.

The department holds institutional memberships with the Computer Society of India (CSI) and the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). Through these affiliations, student branches have been established to foster a strong research culture among students. In collaboration with these professional bodies, the department regularly conducts workshops, seminars, conventions, technical talks, conferences, training programs, and programming competitions.

The department hosts several technical clubs, including the App Club, Code Club, and Graphix Club, along with a non-technical Pixinsight Club. These clubs aim to enhance students’ practical skills by encouraging application development, strengthening coding abilities, fostering creativity in design and graphics, and promoting artistic expression and visual creativity through non-technical activities.

To support the holistic development of students as dynamic young professionals, the department also encourages active participation in cultural and sports activities such as Purushottam, Firodiya, Sakal Karandak, cricket, football, and volleyball. As a result, students consistently earn awards and accolades for their outstanding performances in these events.

In addition, students actively contribute to social initiatives, including blood donation camps, tree plantation drives, and environmental awareness programs, reflecting their commitment to social responsibility.

The department has fully equipped laboratories, with sufficient systems networked via professional servers. Multi-lab, Internet facility and high-end multimedia workstations help the students to prepare their projects and presentations. The IT department offers high speed LAN connectivity and 24x7 power back up to ensure uninterrupted working.

Graduates of the IT program have diverse career opportunities in fields such as software development, network administration, cyber security, data analytics, cloud computing, and artificial intelligence, along with prospects in IT consultancy and systems integration, while also being encouraged to pursue entrepreneurship and innovation through departmental support
