IEEE 9th Signal Processing Project Competition 2016 - 6th August 2016
9 th Signal Processing Project Competition was organized in August, 2016 at Modern College of
Engineering, Pune by IEEE Signal Processing Society Chapter, Pune Section. For examining
students' technical skills and to provide them a platform, we organized a project competition
which was scheduled on 6th August 2016..
The competition was declared on 2 nd July 2016 and abstracts were supposed to be submitted by
20 th July 2016. With tremendous response from various institutions in Maharashtra, we sent 52
abstracts, to the industry experts for short-listing. The competition was open for UG as well as
for PG students. The experts shortlisted 10 abstracts and those students were called to present
their projects on 6 th August 2016.
Dr. Sanjay S Kadam, PhD from the University of London and Mr Mandar Kulkarni, an
entrepreneur, assessed the projects based on their mathematical skills, programming skills,
idea, innovativeness and many more parameters. Students got an opportunity to present
themselves before such an experienced industry experts. Students got remarks, scope of
improvements and valuable suggestions from the experts.
The winners are:
1st - Pradip Kashid (SKNCOE, Vadgaon, Pune)

8th Signal Processing Project Competition 2015 - 4 th July 2015
A project competition on Signal and Image Processing was organized in July, 2015 at
Modern College of Engineering, Pune by IEEE Signal Processing Society Chapter, Pune
Section.
Sparked off by the father of Signal Processing, Sir J. B. J. Fourier in 18 th
century, Signal Processing is playing vital role in globalization. To contribute to his
excellence and sustain the technological growth, students must be inspired for genuine
research. For examining their genuineness, technical skills and to provide them a
platform, we organized a project competition scheduled as below:
Abstract Submission : 15th June, 2015
Notification of Acceptance : 20th June, 2015
Final Demo and Competition : 4th July, 2015
We were aspired to organize the competition for boosting the students to put-forth
their ideas, innovations by providing positive rivals. This would also help the students to
have a glance at all the projects going around right now.
To get the students' projects testified and to have them an inspiration, we invited
industrial experts. Judges were to assess almost 5 projects, hoping that
the competition will serve as a motivational event for students of Signal Processing
and an arena where learners can exchange experience.
By the end of 20 th June, we received 56 abstracts from UG and PG category from
university of Pune and outside also. The abstracts were from Signal Processing, Image
Processing, Speech Processing, VLSI etc. We sent these abstracts to the three industry
experts in the relevant field who were told to short listed the abstracts. The industry
experts short-listed 17 candidates from UG and PG category. Those candidates were
invited for the project competition on 4 th July, 2015 at 10:00hrs.
A cut to cut competition took place and 3 prizes for the PG and 2 prizes for UG were
distributed immediately after the competition of worth Rs. 10,000. Chair, IEEE SPS
Chapter - Pune Section, Dr. Mrs. K. R. Joshi and industry experts - Mr. Jaydeep Gokhle
and Mr. Amit Kale distributed the prizes as a chief guests.

Students Awareness Contest 2015 was organized jointly by IEEE Pune Section and
IEEE student branch of PVG's College of Engineering and Technology, Pune. This
competition was open for groups from engineering and science colleges conducting graduate
and postgraduate courses. Maximum four members were allowed in a group and each group
had to give presentation to students of 8 th to 10 th standard on the selected topics of technology
which influence day to day life of urban and rural population. 2 groups from our department
had participated in the competition. Students from T.E. A, Aditya Jawadekar, Suraj Jeoor,
Dhanashree Godbole and Pooja Dharamkar were in Group 1 and Sanika Balkawade, Ketan
karambelkar, Siddhi Baravkar and Priyanka Bhosale were in Group 2.
Students had to select one of the technical topics provided by IEEE and give
presentation for about an hour in two schools located in urban area and two located in rural
area. The students had chosen the high schools themselves with the help of Mr. R.S. Deo,
Staff Coordinator of this activity. The topic of presentation selected by Group 1 was
'Communication Technology: wireless, Mobile technologies, Mobile handsets, Wi-Fi,
WiMax, broadband and 3G technology'.
Group 2 had selected Robotics: recent Advances and applications' for the presentation. Both
the groups prepared power point presentations as well as models and charts in order to
explain the concepts in easy manner. After presentation, each group had to submit feedback
forms duly filled and signed by the principal of the school in sealed envelope to IEEE Branch
staff in charge of the college.
The first school visited was PES Modern Boy's high school on 4th August 2015.
Classes of 8 th and 9 th standard were allotted to group 1 and 2 respectively. The students were
amused to see various videos and animations which were used by the participants to create
interest in the session. Students asked questions related to latest trends and books to be
referred to study these technologies. Their doubts were cleared by the participants very well.
Then participants had to submit their report on presentation and evaluate their own
performance based on some parameters such as flow of presentation, materials used, how
students' response was etc. The other part of the report was to be filled by the school
authorities in which the feedback on session was expected based on simplicity of the
presentation and communication with the school students, continuity and logical sequencing,
appropriate examples from the normal life, how was the question and answer session and
would they like to have such sessions in future.
Seminars were also conducted at three more schools-
Genba Sopanrao Moze high school, Yerawada
Someshwar Vidyalaya, Someshwar, Pune
Shankarrao Patil Vidyalaya, Taluka Junnar
Participants got huge response from all the schools and were very much satisfied by the
enthusiasm shown by the audience. School teachers were also happy for conducting such
activities for their students and appreciated the efforts taken by both the groups. Another
opportunity of conducting one more session for new batch of students was given to the
participants by Someshwar Vidyalaya. This was very overwhelming and boosted the
confidence of participants.
Final contest was organized on 23 rd September, 2015 in PVG's College of engineering
and technology. Groups from various colleges of Maharashtra had participated in the
competition and participants had to give presentation on the topic selected, schools visited,
how they explained the concepts to students and some of the personal experiences. Prof.
Mandar Khurjekar, Treasurer at IEEE Pune section and Ex chairman of IEEE Pune section,
Dr. D. J. Doke, Ex principal of college of engineering Pune and Ex dean of faculty of
engineering, Pune university and Mr. Girish Khilari, senior consultant at C-DAC were the
judges of the competition. Participants had to submit the report containing presentation
material, presentation and summary of question and answer session. Both the groups of PES
MCOE shared their experiences and gave brief information on how they interacted with the
students in schools. Various Questions based on schools, number of students included and
knowledge of the topic were asked by the judges and marks were given based on that.
Final results were declared on the same day and group - II of our college secured third rank in
the competition. Prize money of Rs.5000 was given to them and certificate of participation
was given to all.
Outcomes:
This experience of giving presentations will be helpful for students in their project seminars.
Skills like time management, teaching and stage confidence were enhanced.
They learnt how to handle crowd in effective manner.
IEEE certificate of this social activity will power the resume of students.
Awareness about different technical fields was done amongst the school students to build interest in them.
Such awareness will help them in adopting these technologies smoothly and more efficiently in their daily life.
