Mechanical Engineering

Mechanical engineering at Modern College of Engineering is as old as the College (MCOE) itself. The department started its four-year Bachelors program in 1999 with an intake of sixty students which later increased to 120 from the year 2008-09, and yet again to 180 from the academic year 2012-2013.

To foster research and to prepare engineers for professional practices the Department presently has programs at the Master's and Doctorate levels. The post graduate course with area of specialization in Heat Power Engineering was started in 2008-09 and like its undergraduate program is fully government recognized, approved by AICTE and University of Pune.

The department has ten fully equipped labs supervised by experienced teachers. Through the experimentation students gets practical knowledge supplementing the learning gathered in the classroom. In addition to well established Workshop and Conventional Engineering Labs, there are modern Labs like Mechatronics Lab, CAD/CAM/CAE Lab, and CNC work station. Besides well-equipped laboratories the department possesses new rare equipment's like Vapor absorption test-rig, VCR engine setup, heat pipe & heat pump set-ups.

To raise initiative, creativity, talent, leadership and the capability to adopt new technologies we encourage our students for participating in the National Events like SAE BAJA competitions where students have to design, manufacture and drive all-terrain vehicle on the loam track. In 2011, our team won the prize for best acceleration and hill-climb events.

In 2012, our team participated in "Effi-Cycle Competition" at Chandigarh which involved design, manufacturing of Cycle Rickshaw and participation in the race; the team got the First Prize at national level. In March 2011, a major group of mechanical engineering student has received a prize in 'ROBOCON Competition' (International level) held at MIT Pune. Several of the graduates who have passed out as mechanical engineer are occupying responsible positions in various Engineering Industries, Government & Semi Government Organizations or are pursuing higher studies in the premier educational institutes in and outside India.

The department organizes on regular basis different seminars, workshops, and many other short terms courses as well. Through such interactions the department has been quite successful in keeping abreast with new and emerging technologies. The department also organizes on regular basis field trips to power stations, companies and factories to build up good foundation for the students in the areas of power generation, air conditioning, automobile engineering, gear manufacture, press tool and jig design, metrology etc. Some faculties like Prof S. M. Ramnani, Prof P G Rasal and the rest few of the Mechanical engineering has all the skills to look after the in-house maintenance of machinery. There also are morning and evening practice-sessions for students on scooter maintenance. A small shade is made available for this purpose.

There are about 40 full-time faculty members in the department, many of whom have worthy industrial experience and many are members of the SAE, ASME, ISHRAE, ISTE etc.

The department has had revealed a great deal of industry goodwill owing to its continuous interaction with industry for mutual sharing of the academic-industry experiences. At Mechanical Engineering Department, we plan to develop this partnership with local and regional industry and improve the image of the department to a broader academic community. Students of final year level are doing their engineering projects in various industries including KOEL, TATA MOTORS, BEHR, KBL, JOHN DEER, GODREJ, ARAI etc.

Mechanical Engineering is a broad ranging and intellectually demanding discipline involving advanced technology and professional skills. The department of mechanical engineering at MCOE provides high-quality learning opportunities that fully prepare students for a career as a professional engineer. Mechanical engineering department has a diverse and successful student population and the students from the department are well placed in famous organizations during past few years. The prominent among these are

Post-Graduation & Research Center:

In today's competitive recruitment market, mechanical engineering graduates eager to succeed and climb the career ladder have to think carefully about the best way to improve their employment prospects and keep abreast of today's cutting-edge technology. One option is to embark on a postgraduate course in engineering.

The Department offers two-year master's program in 'Heat Power Engineering' to prepare students for research and professional practice. The core faculty for the course comprises the in-house team consisting Prof S. Y. Bhosale, Prof S G Taji, Prof. Dr. R K Patil, Prof S D Mahajan Prof Mrs.V.S.Deshmukh together with distinguished academicians and leading professionals as visiting faculty like Dr. N K Sane, Dr. S. S. Thipse, Dr. V K Ingle, Prof. N.R. Dinkar and few others with rich teaching and or industry experience.

Further development requires an extra commitment emphasizing engineering research and taking a one step forward for doctoral program. Not long, University of Pune has recognized the Mechanical Engineering Department of this institute to establish a Center for promoting the research activity. Prof. S. G. Taji & Prof S. M. Ramnani are already working on BCUD funded Research projects. Numbers of post-graduate students have completed their studies with projects integrated with research. Several research papers are published every year by students and staff of the PG department.

The department wishes to actively engage in exploring the areas of Thermal Engineering such as Heat Transfer, Refrigeration and Air conditioning to provide R & D leadership required for our industry. The department thus aims to become a premier department among affiliated and other autonomous institutes.
