Road Safety Management Campaign [Social Event]
Day & Date : Wednesday, 14/09/2016
Objectives : Road safety is primarily meant about the protection and security of all those who travel on roads. It encapsulates all - from pedestrians to animal-drawn vehicles and from two-wheelers to all types of multi-wheel transport. The importance of this can be judged from the fact that according to our national statistical data, out of total reported accidents, 42 per cent involve pedestrians one way or the other. Each year over 1 million people are killed and 50 million injured on roads around the world. This trend can be curtailed by creating awareness about road safety through workshops and seminars as well as educating children by incorporating basic road-safety lessons in their syllabus right from the outset.
Outcomes : It was a very beneficial and informative campaign. Students learned many new things as well as decided to incorporate them in their day to day lives. It helped them to become a more aware and responsible citizen of the nation. Road safety is the need of the hour and such campaigns should be regularly held in future too. The roads safety management campaign satisfied the following objectives
  • Increased awareness and knowledge of traffic environment
  • Appropriate survival skills necessary for the safe use of the road environment
  • Understanding of the behavior and attitudes that have an influence on road safety
  • Knowledge and understanding of how humans, vehicles, and systems interact with work
  • Decision making skills that will enable them to make choices and to take responsibility for their own safety and that of others

All the students gathered near Balgandharva Natya Mandir (Shivajinagar, Pune). They were accompanied by two of faculty members- Mrs. Radhika Gulhane and Ms.Snehal Hon. Students had already prepared banners regarding various issues related to road safety and measures to overcome them. At the venue, students were divided in groups of ten and each student was assigned specific task like holding banners regarding road safety, instructing and creating awareness among the pedestrians and drivers about road safety, etc. Accordingly, they were assigned appropriate areas, which they were supposed to monitor. It is found that at least 25 per cent of the total number of accidents involve motorcyclists riding without their helmets and youth showing off by performing stunts. At the campaign students also encouraged motorcyclists to wear helmets and informed them about the mishaps taking place due to not wearing helmets. They also thanked and encouraged the citizens who were already wearing their helmets. They were also lucky to hear from PSI of Pune Mr. Laad Sir. He gave them valuable information regarding rules and regulations to be followed while driving a vehicle, learning about traffic lights, road signs, documents that a person should carry while driving a vehicle, eligibility criteria for driving a specific vehicle, etc . He also warned them about the hazards of rash driving. After the discussion, the students asked him their doubts and queries related to road safety.
