ISLE

The Indian Society of Lighting Engineers (ISLE) is a professional body in the field of illuminating engineering. Students of Electrical can be a part of this student branch. ISLE is affiliated to the International Commission on Illumination. It is also a member of Lux Pacifica(quadrennial lighting conference), a lighting body that represents 60% of the world's population. It is closely associated with the Bureau of Indian Standards, Bureau of Energy Efficiency, the Department of Science and Technology, the Ministry of Power, the Ministry of Non-Conventional Energy Sources and the Electrical Lamp and Component Manufacturers Association of India.

Objectives : Main aim was to enhance student’s knowledge of automation tools and State of art technology in Illumination Automation.
Summary of the Activity/Event:

The guest lecture on “Automation of Lighting Systems” was conducted on 27th May 2021, Thursday from 4.30 AM to 6.30 PM for BE I and II shift as well as ISLE student members. Speaker for the lecture was Mr. Sudhir Patil, founder, Leap Infosys, Pune and currently serving as Hon. Secretory for ISLE – Pune Local Chapter. He very well explained the motive of automation in modern life style. He explained two case studies and elaborate use of DALI for control and dimming application of lights. Students discussed various other automation techniques which can be used to control lights in commercial and residential places.

Outcome :
  • 1. Students understood modern tool DALI used for lighting automation
  • 2. Students recognize various automation tools used for home automation.
Installation Ceremony with Technical Presentation on DALI-2 and Visit to BAG Electronics, Pune

  • 2. To see manufacturing of LED drivers
Summary of the Activity/Event:

Two staff members along with three ISLE student members got a opportunity to attend a event. Event started with Installation Ceremony of recently elected Young & Dynamic TEAM of Pune Local Centre. Project Manager Mr.Shendye explained what is DALI and what is a difference between DALI 01 and DALI02. Which are compatible equipments and what a protocol is. Then all participants visited BAGS Electronics factory. Manufacturing and testing plants are shown to all and session ended with the discussion.

Outcome :
  • 1. Students get introduced with modern tool used to control lights in building automation i.e. ‘Digital Addressed Lighting Interface’
  • 2. Students get knowledge about how LED drivers are manufactured and tested.
Chat With Light ‘Space, light and you’

Objectives :
  • To know what is light but more important what happens when light embraces the surrounding.
Summary of the Activity/Event:

Total 23 participants were present. Ten students attended activity. The Bioscope Studio is a Space dedicated to visual art and it’s an experience to be taken by the major 4 senses. Students See and Feel the various collage and frames giving a glimpse of the urban scape through a kaleidoscope of people, the charm of the old cities, the captivating palaces, the breezy beaches, the nostalgic cobblestone lanes to the antiquity temples. Once at the bioscope while on the art tour students go through the process of - ▪ Sensation ▪ Stimulation ▪ Perception Through the reflexes of the 4 Major Senses - ▪ Vision Once you start to observe around through your sense of vision, the art and the light falling on it leaves an impact on how you feel. Lighting helps to not only see things but perceive things and influence your mood. ▪ Sound Now slowly you are glued to the background score which soothes your mind and influences your behavior as it affects all aspects of mind, body and brain. ▪ Aroma As time passes slowly you start feeling the aroma of a natural flavor taking you back to our roots. Its stimulation leaves a captivating experience for that period. ▪ Touch Surfaces of different materials have a different texture, hardness, and levels and as we touch them with our energy field around an interaction happens and depending upon the surface type, one goes through a range of emotions from calm, harsh, enticing, delighting, restless. Discussion also gave birth to number of Questions, which were explained by Er.Abhijit Salunke and Er.Parag Shirole.

Outcome :

Students understand the light from different prospective.

Objectives :
  • To promote innovation and creativity in developing smart city projects.
Summary of the Activity/Event:

The event is managed by the students for the students. This year it was held on 12th January 2019. The honorable guest present during the function from various professional societies and industries had guided and judged various competitions. Dr. Prakash Barjatiya ISLE Governing body member, Dr.Prof. Mrs.N.R.Kulkarni HOD of Electrical department, Dr. Prof. Mrs. H. H. Kulkarni, M-Pulse Co-coordinator and Prof. Mr. Kamal Kant Electrical Department Co-coordinator and Ojas Bhagwat M-pulse student head were present for inaugural function.This year total four Techno-managerial events were organized. Students work for marketing, advertising, finance, documentation, designing etc. The overall event held under the guidance and judgement of Mr.Vinayk Apte and Mr.Tushar Gupta.They are entrepreneur and alumni of Modern College of Engineering. The event started with the First round on the mobile App called "SPACE CITY". Participants have to build a smart city in this app .After the time of one hour the second round began .In Second round the students were given an ‘A1’ size sheet and were asked to prepare a ‘Smart City’ block daigram. In the third round, the students had to present their layout and had to prove how their plan was better than others.

Outcome :
  • The students got a brief idea regarding town planning and its various aspects.
  • Innovative and creative ideas for ‘Smart City’ development were put forward.

Summary of the Activity/Event:
There were three domains in this competition:
  • Power system, Renewable Energy and Energy Audit.
  • Control System, Automation & Industrial Drives
  • Electrical Machines and Utilization. Total No of groups participated in event is 48, which are from different colleges i.e. DYPCOE Kolhapur,GCOE Karhad,PVGCOET,AISSMS COEP, S.V.P.M 's COE, Malegaon(Bk.)BVCOEP,ZCOER Pune Vidya Pratishthan's Kamalnayan Bajaj Institute of Engineering and Technology,Baramati ,Trinity College of Engineering Pune. Students have presented their innovative concepts in different thrust areas like Renewable, Agricultural, Machines, power system, automation & control etc. The Domain Wise winners are from DYPCOE Kolhapur,GCOE Karhad, PVGCOET,PES’s MCOE PUNE.

Debate on 'What is LED and Why should we care for it?'

Summary of the Activity/Event:
  • It is second activity under 'Chat on Light' As decided student opened a topic 'What is LED and Why should we care for it?' by discussing various advantages and need of LED. It included 17 experts from all related fields, architects, lighting designers, lighting manufactures, software and hardware etc. Most importantly it was well received even by students from architecture and engineering faculties. This meet-up was held at PES’s Modern College of Engineering,Pune.
  • The session revolved debating around the advantages and disadvantages of using LED and other fixtures. Blue hazard is also taken into consideration. All agree with the point that no other light source can be digitally controlled as we control beam of LED. Point come forward that recycling of LED is a big challenge in front of new generation and they should think on it in advance.
Outcomes : Students get explorer to lighting world. Get interacted with professionals working in different areas.
Debate on 'Artificial lighting-Necessity, Fantasy or luxury?'

Summary of the Activity/Event: It is a first activity under ‘Chat on Light’ as decided by all members in get together conducted on 16/2/2018. The topic for inaugural “Chat with Light” was Artificial lighting, luxury, need or fantasy….. It included 25 experts from all related fields, architects, lighting designers, lighting manufactures, software and hardware etc. Most importantly it was well received even by students from architecture and engineering faculties. This meet-up was held at MIT School of Technology Management, Kothrud,Pune.
The session revolved debating around the concept of lighting design being a need or luxury. Many experts pointed out that today in a country like India we need lighting design more for the iconic buildings to justify its facades. Some views also presented a need of lighting design for the benefit of human body and mind. A concept of human centric lighting was also discussed. The benefits and hazards of good and bad lighting on human psychology and physiology were stated. The emotional experiences of different kinds of lighting were discussed. The concept of convincing client to expand their budget for a lighting design solely depends of having precedents, and that to locally available.
Finally, it was summed up that lighting design rather than being a need, a luxury or a fantasy is an urgency right now with the present situation of India.
Outcomes : Students get explorer to lighting world. Get interacted with professionals working in different areas.

Summary report :

Group discussion with industrial persons from Leap Infosys and Pratham energy was arranged with interested group of projects. Interaction regarding various aspects of light and automation is carried out by students with them. New areas where students can focus are explored and asked students to come up with new ideas which can be implemented as final year project.

Outcomes : Students get explorer to lighting world. They are able to decide better topic for project. Projects can be conducted in the Audit sector.
Faculty Development Program On "Enhanced Learning Through various Audits in Electrical Engineering".

Objectives : To develop skill set in the Illumination audit.
Summary report :

The department of Electrical engineering have conducted faculty development program during 24/04/2017 to 30/04/2017. This program was mainly designed to develop skill set in the various audits in the field of Electrical Engineering. To impart the know-how about these audits, a training session, some hands on experience to the participants. Different sessions have covered the core areas of Electrical Engineering including various Energy audit, safety audit and power quality audit. The participants were the faculties from various institutes. The FDP was very helpful from audits and consultancy point of view. Actual case studies were discussed in detail by eminent speakers.

Outcomes :
  • Participants can conduct & analyze the real time case studies of Energy Audit, Illumination Audit & Power Quality Audits.
  • Projects can be conducted in the Audit sector.

  • To learn about the Energy efficient lights and right methods to use the lights .

Summary report :

Guest lecture 'Pollution due to lights and Ecofriendly lights' conducted under Indian society of lighting Engineers by Dr. Prakash Barjatia, Governing Body Members of ISLE. He explained different types of lights. He very well elaborate difference between the incandescent lights, CFLs and LEDs. Students understood that LEDs are extremely energy efficient and consume up to 90% less power than incandescent bulbs. He also explained right ways of using the lights. Eco-Friendly lights concept is understood by the students. Students get aware with the various new terms like pollution due to lights like sky glow, trespass, etc .

Outcomes : Students recognised the importance of using Eco-Friendly lights so as to reduce the pollution causing due to lights.

Some views also presented a need of lighting design for the benefit of human body and mind. A concept of human centric lighting was also discussed. The benefits and hazards of good and bad lighting on human psychology and physiology were stated. The emotional experiences of different kinds of lighting were discussed. The concept of convincing client to expand their budget for a lighting design solely depends of having precedents, and that to locally available.
Finally, it was summed up that lighting design rather than being a need, a luxury or a fantasy is an urgency right now with the present situation of India.

The department of Electrical engineering have conducted faculty development program during 24/04/2017 to 30/04/2017. This program was mainly designed to develop skill set in the various audits in the field of Electrical Engineering. To impart the know-how about these audits, a training session, some hands on experience to the participants. Different sessions have covered the core areas of Electrical Engineering including various Energy audit, safety audit and power quality audit. The participants were the faculties from various institutes. The FDP was very helpful from audits and consultancy point of view. Actual case studies were discussed in detail by eminent speakers.

Outcomes :
  • Participants can conduct & analyze the real time case studies of Energy Audit, Illumination Audit & Power Quality Audits.
  • Projects can be conducted in the Audit sector.

Guest lecture 'Pollution due to lights and Ecofriendly lights' conducted under Indian society of lighting Engineers by Dr. Prakash Barjatia, Governing Body Members of ISLE. He explained different types of lights. He very well elaborate difference between the incandescent lights, CFLs and LEDs. Students understood that LEDs are extremely energy efficient and consume up to 90% less power than incandescent bulbs. He also explained right ways of using the lights. Eco-Friendly lights concept is understood by the students. Students get aware with the various new terms like pollution due to lights like sky glow, trespass, etc .
